A Year of Publications on Instructional Coaching and Disciplinary Literacy

This past year, Dr. Jacy Ippolito published four co-authored books with McKeown School of Education colleague Dr. Megin Charner-Laird and colleagues from Boston University (Dr. Christina Dobbs), UMass Lowell (Dr. Chris Montecillo Leider), and the University of Pittsburgh (Dr. Rita Bean).

Together, the four projects focus on Jacy’s two main areas of academic interest and research—instructional coaching and disciplinary literacy—and each is the direct result of years-long projects with colleagues. Beginning with his days as a literacy coach and middle school reading specialist in Cambridge Public Schools, Jacy’s professional and research interests have always focused on the intersection of informal leadership roles (e.g., coaches, specialists, teacher leaders) and how those roles support literacy and instructional improvement in schools.

Jacy Ippolito is a Professor of Secondary and Higher Education in the McKeown School of Education, and Co-Director of the Center for Educational Leadership and Educational Leadership Graduate Programs at Salem State University.

Introducing New Frameworks

The Power of Instructional Coaching in Context (Guilford Press) introduces a new systems-focused framework to guide schools in ensuring that coaching work is well-aligned with both instructional targets and larger contextual features of schools and districts. This book has already guided multiple North Shore and Boston-area school districts in their efforts to refine coaching work.

Critical Disciplinary Literacy (Routledge Press) is the result of multiple years of research and collaboration led by Dr. Christina Dobbs and Dr. Megin Charner-Laird, focused on introducing and refining critical and culturally sustaining approaches to discipline-specific literacy work in schools—the goal being to guide teachers and leaders K-12 in both apprenticing students in disciplinary literacy work and in critiquing, questioning, and expanding the boundaries of the disciplines as we know them.

Updating Research

Two of these books update research- and practice-focused recommendations on coaching (Cultivating Coaching Mindsets, 2nd Ed., Guilford Press) and disciplinary literacy (Disciplinary Literacy Inquiry & Instruction, Harvard Ed. Press) for K-12 schools in the post-pandemic era.
